MicroStrategy Incorporated (NASDAQ:MSTR) shareholders should be happy to see the share price up 23% in the last week. But that doesn’t change the fact that the returns over the last year have been disappointing. During that time the share price has sank like a stone, descending 63%. Some might say the recent bounce is to be expected after such a bad drop. It may be that the fall was an overreaction.

Although the past week has been more reassuring for shareholders, they’re still in the red over the last year, so let’s see if the underlying business has been responsible for the decline.

See our latest analysis for MicroStrategy

Given that MicroStrategy didn’t make a profit in the last twelve months, we’ll focus on revenue growth to form a quick view of its business development. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. That’s because fast revenue growth can be easily extrapolated to forecast profits, often of considerable size.

MicroStrategy grew its revenue by 3.0% over the last year. While that may seem decent it isn’t great considering the company is still making a loss. It’s likely this muted growth has contributed to the share price decline of 63% in the last year. We’d want to see evidence that future revenue growth will be stronger before getting too interested. When a stock falls hard like this, it can signal an over-reaction. Our preference is to wait for a fundamental improvements before buying, but now could be a good time for some research.

You can see how earnings and revenue have changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).

It’s probably worth noting we’ve seen significant insider buying in the last quarter, which we consider a positive. On the other hand, we think the revenue and earnings trends are much more meaningful measures of the business. This free report showing analyst forecasts should help you form a view on MicroStrategy

A Different Perspective

While the broader market lost about 17% in the twelve months, MicroStrategy shareholders did even worse, losing 63%. However, it could simply be that the share price has been impacted by broader market jitters. It might be worth keeping an eye on the fundamentals, in case there’s a good opportunity. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 1.4% per year over half a decade. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Even so, be aware that MicroStrategy is showing 4 warning signs in our investment analysis , you should know about…

MicroStrategy is not the only stock that insiders are buying. For those who like to find winning investments this free list of growing companies with recent insider purchasing, could be just the ticket.
